“She looks like she belongs on the cover of a book”
Taking these senior pictures for Juliana at Baker Park was a dream come true for me. When her mom, Laura, said she had a prom dress she would love to wear for pictures, I could not have been happier! Dresses photograph really well. When she got out of the car in this amazing, green, layered dress I was over the moon! We talked about this at her session, but I just keep telling everyone that she looks like she belongs on the cover of a book or magazine.
Because her dress was green and the surrounding area was all green, thank you Maryland, I kept us mostly on the sidewalk and near the bell tower. This worked out well, I think, because she pops off the background more.
Senior Prom
Because of COVID-19, Juliana and her classmates weren’t able to have a traditional prom. This makes me so incredibly sad, and I’m sure it made her sad. So, I was happy to document her and her beautiful dress so she could someday look back with fondness.
I remember my senior prom. I wore a maroon dress that I borrowed from my sister. I had glitter on my cheeks and my eyes. My sister actually did my make up and I looked amazing. My date was one of my best friends, and all of my friends and I rode to and from together. The museum it was held in was super dark and there were balloons everywhere. It was so much fun! I distinctly remember a lot of Usher and Ludacris playing at my prom, and we definitely ate a lot of chocolate. The rest is a bit hazy because my memory is terrible. However, I do remember I had a total blast.
College
But enough about me. Juliana is going to Elizabethtown college and majoring in occupational therapy. She told me she loves to help people, and the appeal of OT is that she will help people by playing games with them. She’s going to help people get their motor skills back by playing Jenga. Juliana has this life figured out, let me tell you.
What’s in a name?
I asked Laura about the name Juliana, and it actually has a really cool story. I’m not sure if I can tell the first part, but the second part is just as moving. Laura was pregnant with Juliana during the tragedy of 9/11. After September, Laura was reading about the passengers of the plane that was aiming for the pentagon. One of the passengers was a little girl who was heading to disneyland from England. That little girl’s name was Juliana.
I just thought that was such a moving tribute to someone who lost their life, and I thought it was worth sharing.
I’m sorry your senior year was mostly cancelled, Juliana. I’m sorry you weren’t able to go to prom, but I hope these pictures bring a smile to your face and help just a little. Thank you so much for letting me photograph you and letting me be a little part of your story.
